Text messages are no longer 140 characters long (at least if you're not using SMS). Support for pictures, video, and other multimedia. It also helps that it's easier to convince your friends to sign up for a new service if they don't have to pay. Part of this is because most people aren't prepared to pay for them, but it's also because large corporations actually make surprisingly decent apps sometimes. There are a handful of circumstances where end-to-end encryption isn't appropriate, like with public group messaging and some kinds of business communications but across the board, I favored services that cared about security and privacy. The best chat apps all have end-to-end encryption enabled by default, or at a stretch, allow you to quickly turn it on. Do you know who can read your SMS messages? Pretty much everyone. Text messaging should be about the person, not the device. We don't want any green bubble/blue bubble drama here. If, however, you're starting a friend group, desert island colony, or fan club from scratch and you get to pick the tools you use, this is what you should be looking for in messaging apps:Īvailability on both iPhone and Android. The big reason to use any of those apps is that your friends do. Nor did whatever Google is calling its latest messaging foray.

Neither iMessage, SMS, nor Android Messages made this list. So when it came to putting together this list, that freed me up to be pretty strict about the requirements for inclusion.

If that's SMS or smoke signals, you have my full permission to use it. Steps as follows -I still believe the best texting app is normally the one people will actually reply to you with.

Bluestacks is more of a platform for Android app gaming on a PC/MAC, but for my purpose works OK so far. It's fast and works as expected on my i5 with limited virtualization support. But working on a solution to that.īluestacks 3 Android emulator works resonabley well. There are a few issues, such as message date display which I'll mention later if anyone is interested. Open Textra and all SMS/MMS going back 5 years+ appear.Īny questions, let me know. When done, made Textra the default messenging app, and did the Textra "Resync Textra" option - that's a Textra thing. Clicked on that file and did a restore of all messages. Imported a recent SMS Backup & Restore XML file into Bluestacks Made SMS Backup & Restore the default messaging app From the Play store, installed Textra (the app I happen to use for SMS/MMS) and SMS Backup & Restore. In settings had to use Directx instead of OpenGL, to resolve problem of very slow response time.

Over the weekend I'll have some time to install and test Android emulators.Bluestacks 3 Android emulator works resonabley well. Any possible solutions based on my requirements would be appreciated. I've tried everything stated in the Carbonite link in the first post, including spreadsheet programs, and they don't work. Install Android SDK on a PC, maybe in a virtual machine and view that way.Īlso, EditPad Lite 7 can edit huge XML files like mine, but can't view the MMS and not properly formatted.Īny suggestions? Again, I want to place this on a desktop - Windows (or LINUX) - in the OS or virtual machine, and be able to view that single snapshot.

Two options I've found and not tried yet -īluestacks - install Textra or another SMS app on the PC and view the backup XML file The Carbonite (now maintains SMS Backup & Restore) site lists ways to view SMS backups on a PC, but it only works for a minimal (smaller) number of SMS messages. In addtion to SMS, I need to be able to view the MMS - (photos) as well. I would like to delete all messages from my phone but first need to reliably access the "old" messages from a PC. The messages go back 3 or 4 Android phones, LOL! Each night I upload this huge XML file using SMS Backup & Restore. I use Textra and have 30,000+ SMS messages which is 1.6Gb in size.
